The Bethany hostel calendar boasts four major celebrations – the freshers day, Onam and Christmas celebrations and the glamorous annual day christened Bethania. This year Bethania was conducted in all its grandeur on the 11th of February in the hostel premises itself. Mr.Mathew Kunnamangal I.A.S, the chief guest for the function delivered an inspiring speech following which Sridev S, the hostel Secretary presented the annual report.
The Bethany students centre is home to 170 students from various colleges including CET, Medical College and Mar Ivanious College. Nestled between the Mar Ivanious campus and the Navajeevan Vidyalaya, Bethany is a peaceful abode for knowledge seekers and a disciplined institution that has seen nineteen Annual days to date. The hostellers bred in such confines turn out to be affable and hospitable.
Following the opening ceremony were a variety of cultural events that rendered the evening an electric feel and transported the guests to a world of unadulterated joy and fun. The magic show hosted by two students of the hostel itself was well appreciated. The mind-boggling tricks enthused the audience who were already charged up after hearing a few mesmerizing solos. Arun Raj (S4 E1) who was helping the magician points out that magic needs a lot of practice lest it backfires. He reminds that magicians are not sadhus but ordinary men who can move fast and maneuver deftly.
The skit was a satire that pointed out social incongruities and how the gravest of criminals usually go scott free. Among the comical dialogues were hidden a deeper meaning, a hand-crafted didactic. And to think it was done by the students themselves without outside help makes it even more appreciable. Similarly the mime had a message too, and confirmed how silence can often be more profound than speech. Sandeep(S4 E1) , one of actors for the mime delves deep into the subject, “Student criminality is on the rise and plausible checks are to come in place. We wouldn’t get a better audience to deliver the message and hence this theme”. With an attendance of more than 1000 students at Bethania Sandeep’s theme was apt to say the least. The protagonist of the mime contracts HIV and commits suicide. It was a somber still that ended the play, invoking thoughts.
Bethany never takes a backseat in treating its guests with palatable food. Vignesh S (S4 E1) who has been to Bethania twice before opines well about the hi tea and snacks. The kassata slice as desert was sans equal comments Kiran R of University College. There was a brilliant display of fireworks as the evening gave way to the night. Missiles shot up and exploded in the middle of the night sky thus illuminating it. Even the moon seemed to be staring down at the exploding brilliance.
Bethany Hostel has given CET a lot of its talent. Sijo last years GSec is a fine example. Viva Bethany, Viva Bethania...
